First-home buyers outside the main centres won't have to fight off property investors

Real Estate Institute figures shows median house prices in Manawatu and Whanganui have climbed a record 24.1 per cent in a year - to 397-thousand-dollars.
Southland rose 22.1 per cent to 315-thousand-dollars.
But One Roof editor Owen Vaughan says the housing is more affordable.
He says although it's a big percentage jump - the cheaper housing means it translates to a reasonable figure.
