Civil defence's nationwide 'ShakeOut' is at 1.30 this afternoon

Civil defence's nationwide 'ShakeOut' is at 1.30 this afternoon

The earthquake and tsunami drill is to remind people to drop, cover and hold during an earthquake, and head to higher ground if they live in a coastal area.

Civil Defence director Sarah Stuart-Black says those actions could save lives in an emergency.

She says New Zealand has more than 20,000 earthquakes each year, most of which we don't even feel - but there have been some major ones in recent years.
