Specialist vehicles carrying armed officers will regularly patrol Counties Manukau, Waikato and Canterbury as part of a trial.
The trial will attempt to reduce response time to firearm-related callouts because armed response teams will be on patrol and ready to go.
New Zealand's 17 Armed Offenders Squads are made up police officers with general duties who have to return to the station, suit up then head out.
Police have had growing concerns about the increasing number of callouts involving firearms, which is said to be behind the move.
The Police Commissioner will speak to media about the plan this morning.
