31-year-old Joseph Borton has been sent to jail for life for murdering the Karori woman - with a 19-year non-parole period.
He's been given indefinite detention for the assault of her daughter.
Detective Senior Sergent Warwick McKee says it's the worst case in his 30 years in the force.
He says the offending can only be described as abhorrent, cruel and utterly disgraceful behaviour.
McKee says today's sentencing is a small step in the family's healing process.
