A High Court judge has spoken out at the lack of a High Court jury trial facility in Tauranga
19 October 2019
Justice Timothy Brewer says given the size of Tauranga and the heavy jury trial workload commitments, the city needs to have its own High Court.
He says no money has been allocated for courtrooms infrastructure in the region, despite repeated pleas.
Justice Brewer's comments came at a pre-trial hearing for a couple accused of sexual crimes against children.
Due to the lack of facilities, he was forced to allocate a "standby" trial fixture in late 2020 for the pair, in Hamilton.
