The Herald understands ANZ and KiwiBank are attempting to win customers by offering up to three-thousand-dollar cash back incentives on certain home loans.
Behind the scenes, some banks are also willing to scrap fees and negotiate other deals.
Chief executive of Squirrel Mortgages, John Bolton, says low interest rates are helping bring people back into the market, but it's fundamentally about confidence.
Questions remain about whether the recent bounce-back is a turning point for the market, or simply a seasonal boost.
