Senior doctors claim Auckland District Health Board is suffering from a shortage of specialists

A survey by the Senior Doctors' Union estimates the number of specialists at the Auckland DHB is 20 percent down on what's needed to provide safe and appropriate care to patients.
Association of Salaried Medical Specialists executive director Ian Powell says that's about 101 specialists short.
He says many of them have to work when they are infectious or sick.
He says over a five year period, Auckland DHB is at risk of losing a quarter of its specialists due to aging, lack of job satisfaction and being overworked.
