National commemorations of the lengthy conflict begin this morning at a marae in Waitara.
It comes just days after a bill apologising for the Crown's actions at Parihaka was passed.
Minister for Maori Crown Relations Kelvin Davis says the wars resulted in a huge loss of life, and land - and we need to remember.
He says it's nothing to hide from.
