Police have arrested and charged a youth with murder after the death of an eight year old boy in Southland

Police have arrested and charged a youth with murder after the death of an eight year old boy in Southland

Officers were alerted to the death in Otautau , west of Invercargill, about 10.30 last night.

Southland Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman says the charged person will appear in the Otago Youth Court later today.

He says a forensic examination is being completed at two addresses, and a post-mortem is yet to be carried out.

A support team is working with Victim Support, the victim's family, and the boy's school.

Bowman says the community is so tight-knit, the death is affecting a number of people.

Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.
