The Southern District Health Board say it's believed the gardener developed Legionnaire's Disease - a type of deadly pneumonia.
He's thought to have been infected while adding compost to a glasshouse - developing flu-like symptoms and passing away within a week.
Medical Officer of Health Anura Jayasinghe says at this time of year - gardeners should be wearing masks and gloves to handle potting mix.
He says they should also avoid using it in enclosed spaces - and wash their hands afterwards.
