A North Canterbury school is rallying together following the death of a much-loved student

Six-year-old Lachlan Gebhardt died after a fiery high speed crash on Tuesday, in Rangiora.

His father remains in critical condition in Middlemore Hospital.

Fernside Primary School principal, David Taylor, says the parent community is being hugely understanding.

He says Lachlan was loved by his peers and teachers... and in a short time, made a huge contribution.
