Austrian tourist killed by elephant in Namibia

The 59-year-old victim, who has not been named, was camping in an area renowned for its population of rare desert elephants.

A 59-year-old Austrian man has been killed by an elephant in Namibia, according to that country's Government.

The man's death was confirmed in a Facebook post by the African nation's tourism ministry, which initially reported him as Australian.

"Sadly today the Ministry received a report that a tourist was killed by an elephant," the post said.

"The Ministry has since confirmed that a 59-year-old Austrian national man was killed in the Huab River, Kunene region where a group of tourists were camping, this morning.

"This is a very unfortunate incident and highly regrettable."

The statement said the man's group had not been camping in a designated camping area.

Police are investigating whether the group was with a tour guide at the time.

"The Ministry wishes to reiterate our call to our very welcome tourists to always be cautious and adhere to the rules and regulations put in place for their safety," the statement concluded.

"Finally, we wish to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the deceased."

The Kunene region is home to one of only two known groups of desert elephants in the world, according to Namibia's tourism board.

The animals are slightly smaller than other African elephants, have larger feet and longer legs, and travel in smaller groups.
