An AUT lecturer is backing the Mental Health Foundation - which wants the new armed police squads scrapped

An AUT lecturer is backing the Mental Health Foundation - which wants the new armed police squads scrapped

The six month trial is taking place in Counties Manukau, Waikato and Canterbury.

The Mental Health Foundation's CEO says excessive force is overused in mental health cases.

AUT senior criminology lecturer Dr John Buttle says excessive force has been used on patients in the past - because it can be frightening dealing with them.

He says mental health issues are best dealt with, without Police - because they take an action orientated approach, which isn't helpful.
