A paediatrician's urging parents to think carefully about the complications of tongue tie surgery

A paediatrician's urging parents to think carefully about the complications of tongue tie surgery

A team of researchers from New Zealand's Paediatric Surveillance Unit found babies can experience breathing problems, bleeding and weight loss following the minor surgery.

Otago University's Dr Ben Wheeler says the surgery's often seen as a quick fix to help babies who aren't feeding well.

But he says parents need to know the possible benefits and risks of the procedure.

He says breastfeeding support and education should be prioritised before any decisions are made about surgery.
