Joden Martin faced potential prison time for the unprovoked attack on TV3 presenter Aziz Al-Sa'afin and Fergus Fauvel on Auckland's Karangahape Rd in February.
Martin was on remand for another assault.
His defence lawyer said the attack came on the anniversary of his father's death - and he was grieving, but the assault was "stupid and unacceptable".
Judge Robert Ronayne said Martin's religious views were no excuse for toxic hatred.
