Big concerns from Westland's mayor as his region is hammered... yet again

Big concerns from Westland's mayor as his region is hammered... yet again

It could be weeks before the West Coast's only main road is open north to Hokitika, due to a massive slip at Mount Hercules.

Westland District mayor, Bruce Smith, says he's worried about the tourism industry getting cut off in peak season.

He says he doesn't think the Mount Hercules slip will be cleared for a month, but NZTA think it could be sooner.

Smith is joining Civil Defence Minister Peeni Henare this morning - flying to Franz Josef, Fox Glacier and Mount Hercules.
