The Kiwi has beaten world number four Filipe Toledo in the round of 32 at the season-ending World Surf League event in Hawaii.
The Brazilian was in with a chance to claim his first world crown.
Earlier in the competition Christie required 10 stitches on a bone-deep wound to his left shin.
He'll face Aussie Jack Freestone for a spot in the semi-finals.
