Fear of another second round exit has spurred Serena Williams into the quarter-finals of Auckland's ASB Tennis Classic

Fear of another second round exit has spurred Serena Williams into the quarter-finals of Auckland's ASB Tennis Classic

The top seed has had to come back from a set down to knock out fellow-American Christina McHale and set up a meeting with Laura Siegemund in the quarters.

Williams suffered a shock second round exit in 2017.

She says she had to get mad after the first set.

Defending champion Julia Goerges has breezed past Jil Teichmann in straight sets in their match.

She'll face Caroline Wozniacki in the quarters, after she overcame Lauren Davis in three sets.
