New high-tech parking cameras are cracking down on illegally-parked motorists in Auckland

New high-tech parking cameras are cracking down on illegally-parked motorists in Auckland

Camera cars are being rolled out by Auckland Transport, which have new licence plate recognition cameras fitted to parking inspectors' vehicles.

They'll initially be used in residents' parking zones, and will automatically scan a number plate to determine whether the vehicle belongs to a resident with a permit or voucher.

If not, the cameras will capture an image of the car's surroundings, its position on GPS, and the exact position of the air valves on its tyres.

That means they'll be able to tell whether a car has moved.

The technology is thought to be a New Zealand first.
