Tennys Sandgren has lost to 2010 and 2014 champ John Isner in the second round.
Isner - who had a first round bye - had 41 unforced errors to Sandgren's 23, but took charge in the final set to win 6-3 after the first two sets were decided in tiebreakers.
Isner says there wasn't a lot in it.
Italian Andreas Seppi has ousted the seventh seed Adrian Mannarino in three sets, while Spaniard Feliciano Lopez has also advanced.
