Two people have appeared in the Hutt Valley District Court following death of Davis Phillips in Taita on Sunday.
A woman is charged with Phillips' murder, while a man is charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Reporter Harry Poland was in court, and says the finger gesture came from the public gallery as the male left the courtroom.
He says a woman in the public gallery pulled a rude gesture at him.
The accused remained stoic and kept looking straight at the judge.
Both the accused have been granted interim name suppression and will appear in the High Court in Wellington next month.
