A day of remembrance for the 256 lives lost in the Hawke's Bay earthquake

A day of remembrance for the 256 lives lost in the Hawke's Bay earthquake

It's the 89th anniversary of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which devastated the Napier Hastings area.

Hastings residents will gather at their clock tower to hear the bells toll at 10.47am - the time the earthquake struck.

Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says it's important to keep retelling the story.

She says young people need to know that Hawke's Bay is on a fault-line and to stay prepared - because they never want a repeat of the enormous loss of life.
