It's the 89th anniversary of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake which devastated the Napier Hastings area.
Hastings residents will gather at their clock tower to hear the bells toll at 10.47am - the time the earthquake struck.
Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says it's important to keep retelling the story.
She says young people need to know that Hawke's Bay is on a fault-line and to stay prepared - because they never want a repeat of the enormous loss of life.
