Checking for a potential gas leak is a top priority for Southland Civil Defence this morning

The region's in a state of emergency following widespread flooding.
Most Gore residents were allowed to return to their homes late yesterday - but others in Mataura and Wyndham are still waiting to hear it's safe.
Civil Defence Emergency Controller, Angus McKay , says Fire and Emergency NZ are ensuring there's no risk of ammonia gas being produced from the old pulp and paper mill in Mataura.
Waste from the Tiwai smelter is being kept there.
He says that's one of the first things they have to tick of the list before opening up the township to residents - and he's hoping for an answer by 10am.
