The Government's pumping almost 37 million dollars into waterfront and visitor projects.
Political reporter Aaron Dahmen says it comes just months after the tragic Whakaari White Island disaster.
The cash will go to a new commercial boat harbour, revitalising the riverfront, and a visitor hub and cultural centre.
Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones says the boost will create a sense of vibrancy and optimism - and provide permanent benefits for the community.
