Coronavirus mayhem on Wall Street now exceeds the 2008 financial crisis, by at least one measure

The VIX - a gauge of stock market volatility - has spiked 43 percent, as Covid-19 fears rip through Wall Street.
That takes out the previous record from October, 2008.
Worries about the coronavirus outbreak sent the Dow plunging nearly three thousand points, or 12.9 percent.
The S&P 500 slumped 12 percent, its worst day since 1987.
Trading on the New York Stock Exchange was halted for 15 minutes, to slow extreme selling.
