Dr Huirangi Waikerepuru was 91.
Waikerepuru - who was of Taranaki and Ngapuhi descent - dedicated his life to trying to preserve the Maori language.
He was involved in the Waitangi Tribunal claim that led to Te Reo Maori becoming an official language - and was a driving force behind developing Maori TV and the Iwi Radio Network.
Waikerepuru was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Maori in 2014.
