A motorcyclist is in a critical condition in hospital following a crash in Auckland

Police say they are aware of a report the motorcyclist was being pursued by Police before the crash - but say at no point was the motorcyclist signalled to pull ove and there was no pursuit.

They say a police vehicle first saw the motorcyclist travelling at high speed on the Southwestern motorway- before losing sight of it.

The same motorcycle was later spotted on Mt Albert Road and police made a U-turn to follow but immediately lost sight of it again.

Officers came across the crash a short time later, further along Mt Albert Road.
