The High Court has declined an interim injunction to preserve the exclusive negotiation period previously agreed with Stuff's Australian owner, Nine.
The owner of the Herald and Newstalk ZB attempted to enforce Nine to abide by the terms of an exclusivity contract - running until May 31.
NZME CEO Michael Boggs says although the company's disappointed by the court's decision, they respect the judgment.
He's convinced NZME is the best possible owner for Stuff.
He says the company will attempt to buy Stuff in the future if the opportunity arises.
