Emilio Tanirau Whaanga attacked a 55-year-old man after a heated argument over a parking spot at Countdown Queensgate.
Tanirau Whaanga has been sentenced today to three years and three months in prison for manslaughter at the High Court in Wellington.
Herald Reporter Melissa Nightingale says defence lawyer Chris Nicholls told the Court the outcome may have been different if the accused had got more help.
Chris Nicholls told the Court he wasn't referred to anger management programmes on his previous charges because he didn't fit the criteria
despite the need being clear to Probation Officers.
