Constable Matthew Hunt was conducting a routine traffic stop on Massey's Reynella Drive when he was shot.
The 28-year-old had a degree in criminology and had been an officer for two and a half years.
Waitemata Superintendent Naila Hassan says Hunt passionately served his community.
She says he was a fit young man who set himself high standards and was highly respected by his peers.
