MetService says the skies are clearing for the upper North Island, and showers are heading to the south-west of the North Island.

Meteorologist Cameron Coutts says it'll also spread to the upper South Island.

He says a south east flow will bring heavier rain later on - with a watch out for Dunedin and northern parts of Southland.
