Reports a ship wreck leaching contaminants into the sea off the Bay of Plenty coast

The Regional Council is investigating sightings of a large white drift coming from the Rena wreck on Astrolabe Reef.

It is understood the plume's already reached Motiti Island.

Technical advisor for Motiti Rohemoana Trust, Te Atarangi Sayers says locals are extremely concerned about any potential environmental impacts.

A flight over the reef this morning sighted no obvious discharge.
