MetService has issued a severe weather warning.
A low pressure system's expected to move eastwards across New Zealand today and tomorrow.
It'll be preceded by strong northeasterly winds or gales in northern and western areas.
A period of heavy rain's likely for upper and lower parts of the South Island, as well as the West Coast.
The upper North Island can expect a brief period of heavy rain later today.
The strongest northeasterlies are expected in the upper and central North Island today.
