A nine-month old girl and an eight-year-old boy have died in a Christchurch house fire

Emergency services were called to the house in Burwood about 10.45 last night.

At a press conference, Assistant Area Commander Mike Bowden says crews arrived to find a well-involved blaze.

He says the boy was rescued by firefighters during search and rescue operations but tragically died.

The baby girl was found in an unsurvivable bedroom.

Three other people in the house escaped the flames.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but investigators will remain on site until at least tomorrow.
