Wind has been particularly strong in the Coromandel Peninsula, Great Barrier Island and Northland.
Fire and Emergency says it received about 30 call-outs between Auckland and Kaeo, between 6.30 and 11.30 last night.
Crews were called to downed trees and a couple of downed power lines - but there have been no reports of any injuries.
The strong winds are expected to continue until early tomorrow morning.
