Oranga Tamariki has released the findings from its progress report

Oranga Tamariki has released the findings from its progress report

It reveals after recent changes to its service - the welfare of Maori children is starting to improve.

Deputy Chief Executive Hoani Lambert says for the first time in many years, the Ministry for Children is seeing a drop in numbers of Maori children in care.

About 75 per cent of tamariki placed with caregivers are being looked after by their whanau, or Maori caregivers.

Lambert says new partnerships Oranga Tamariki has established with local iwi and Maori providers are behind the positive change.
