They've lost 32-19 to the Crusaders in Hamilton to now be winless from their eight games in Super Rugby Aotearoa.
But it's come after a controversial call.
With 20 minutes remaining and one point separating the teams, Crusaders wing Sevu Reece scored after what many believe to be a knock on.
The officials believed otherwise.
Gatland says he thought it went forward.
