California's national park recorded a blistering 54.4 degrees yesterday, which might be a new world record.
High temperatures and warmer seas have impacted New Zealand rainfall, particularly in Auckland, which has had just 31-percent of it's usual amount from January to May this year.
NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll says future rain predictions are low, and it's likely Auckland will need to conserve water through spring and summer.
He says sea temperatures around the coast are warmer than usual, so that could be a hint of what's to come.
