Otago residents are being urged to understand how dangerous frost can be - when it comes to fire

A warm, dry week has kept local firefighters busy - attending a spate of bush fires.
Rural Fire Officer Mark Mawhinney says many people don't realise frost dries out grass - and there's a much greater risk of fires escaping.
He says they've had to deal with several completely preventable blazes - caused by cigarettes, hot ashes and dry grass too close to burn piles.
Mawhinney says to be safe, burn-offs should be done in the morning when there's more moisture - at least 30 metres downwind of anything combustible.
