Hundreds of millions of dollars on the line in Wellington today
Hundreds of millions of dollars is on the line in the High Court in Wellington today, as claims against the government's ban on oil and gas exploration are heard
24 August 2020
Greymouth Gas Turangi Limited is suing Energy Minister Megan Woods over the way the ban was implemented in 2018.
The New Zealand-owned energy company argues the ban was enforced seven months before the law was actually changed.
Greymouth Gas boss Mark Dunphy says they've been seeking a permit in Taranaki, and the government is obliged to grant it.
He says it's likely to be two to three years worth of gas for the nation, and a couple hundred million dollars of value - so it's no trifle.
