Strong winds are already blowing across the lower North Island with a warning of more to come

MetService says wind gusts of up to 107 kilometres per hour have been recorded in Castlepoint in Wairarapa this morning.

A Strong Wind Warning is in place for Wairarapa and Wellington, with the strongest northwesterly gusts expected between six tonight and early Wednesday morning.

Motorists driving over the Remutaka Hill are being asked to take extra care, especially those in high-sided vehicles or riding a motorbike.
