The 36-year-old's charged with failing to stay in his room for a required period under the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act.
He flew in from Australia on a deportation flight and tested negative on day three.
Defence lawyer Maxine Pitch applied for suppression on the grounds of preserving fair trial rights and to prevent endangering him, noting "tempers are high" during the pandemic.
He will next appear at the district court in mid-October.
