The eighth seed has stunned US Open champion Dominic Thiem in five sets across five hours and eight minutes, including three tie-breakers.
Schwartzman felt he should have wrapped it up in straight sets - instead it went to a 6-2 decider.
Schwartzman will face either Rafael Nadal or Jannik Sinner for a place in the final - that match is still to be played on centre court this morning.
