The side finished third in the Plunket Shield, third in the Super Smash and made the Ford Trophy 50-over final last summer.
Rutherford, who is fresh out of a T20 stint with Worcestershire in England, says if they keep improving the silverware should come.
The Plunket Shield starts next Monday.
