A range of precious plants were stolen from Wellington Botanic gardens' begonia house on Monday night.
There was no damage and staff are unsure how the intruders snuck in.
Garden manager David Sole says the plants would have been difficult to conceal.
He says some were up to a metre-and-a-half tall so you couldn't just stick them in your pocket and walk out.
