Matthew McConaughey almost quit acting to be a wildlife guide or a symphony orchestra conductor

The 'Dallas Buyers Club' star considered walking away from his profession entirely when he was trying to move away from romantic comedies towards more serious fare and had a variety of new career options in mind

Speaking to Oprah Winfrey on Apple TV+'s 'The Oprah Conversation', he admitted: "I dabbled with thinking about other careers, I dabbled with high school football coach, I dabbled with symphony orchestra leader, I dabbled with wildlife guide, schoolteacher. I was not going back."

But ultimately, the 50-year-old actor came to a realisation that made him continue on his career path as he knew there could be great "rewards" ahead.

He added: "Just the same way I went to Australia for a year and stayed on a handshake, I was in. And I started to get that feeling that even though the harder this gets, this means there’s more reward on the other side.

"Stick with it, stay in it, don’t pull the parachute, McConaughey."

Elsewhere in the interview, Matthew recalled the instant connection he felt when he met now-wife Camila Alves for the first time in 2006.

He said: "I didn't say, 'Who is that.' I said, 'What is that.'

"We had a great connection. I spoke better Spanish and Portuguese that night than I have since, you know what I mean?"

The couple went on to marry in 2012 and have three children together, Levi, 12, Vida, 10, and Livingston, eight.
