The inquest has begun in Auckland into the death of 11-year-old Hannah Francis on Mt Ruapehu in July 2018.
It's exploring what caused the crash and whether a safety restraint system could've saved Hannah.
Matt, recalls how passengers panicked as the bus picked up speed on Ohakune Mountain Road.
He says one jumped out the rear door.
He pulled Hannah on to his lap, but when the bus hit a barrier, then lurched left, Hannah was torn away from him.
Outside on the road, he learned she had died.
The inquest continues.
