Shawn Mendes loves that Camila Cabello has “got his back”

The 22-year-old singer has been romancing his ‘Señorita’ collaborator since July 2019, but the pair were friends for years before they started dating, and Shawn believes their strong platonic bond has helped them stay together as a couple

He said: "For the past four years, just being friends and not being able to see each other very often, to finally being able to be together, she was always there to look out for me, as a human being. She’s got my back, and I think that's what your partner's for.”

And having known each other for years, the ‘Treat You Better’ hitmaker says the 23-year-old singer understands him on a level that others don’t.

He added: "We were watching videos of us when we were like, 16. We both got so caught up in it, and we looked at each other and were like, 'I don't feel good.' Because we were taken right back to that insecure, unsure 15 year old.

“We just looked at each other and were like, 'We feel weird right now, don't we?' And she's like, 'Yeah, we do.' And I'm like, 'I'm so happy you know why. 'Cause I don't know if I could explain this very well to other people.’ ”

Shawn and Camila are currently living together, and the ‘In My Blood’ singer loves his domestic life with his beau.

Speaking in his new Netflix documentary, ‘In Wonder’, he said: "It's pretty cool, she's renting an apartment in the West Village, so we're staying there. Making eggs and trying to figure out how to use a Keurig. Normal things, you know? This is really cool, to just be like, a 21-year-old guy.

"We wake up in the morning, and [then] we have to get in separate SUVs to head to the same place. It’s like almost living a taste of a normal life in the least normal-life way."
