British department store chain Debenhams is set to close -- more than two centuries after it started

The last remaining bidder for the company has withdrawn its offer.
Debenhams' 124 UK stores are set to cease operating -- with all 12-thousand employees likely to lose their jobs.
A further 13-thousand retail jobs are also at risk, after Arcadia -- which operates Topshop, Burton and Dorothy Perkin -- was put into administration.
Debenhams opened its first store in London in 1778.
